African Americans in Behavior Therapy

African Americans in Behavior Therapy is a special interest group (SIG) aimed to provide support for and to facilitate research and practice of the use of cognitive-behavioral therapy with African American populations.

This SIG is for psychologists, researchers, students and others with an interest in CBT research and practice as it pertains to African Americans. Its is also a great opportunity for networking and camaraderie. Any ABCT member with an interest is welcome to join. Just pay our very low annual membership fee and you'll be added to our database. You'll receive our SIG annual newsletter and be eligible to submit a poster the annual SIG cocktail poster reception.

Poster Submissions

The African Americans in Behavior Therapy SIG (Special Interest Group) will be present at the 2016 ABCT Convention in New York City (October 27-30, 2016) at the Friday night SIG cocktail reception.

If you have a research project about African Americans, please consider submitting an abstract for a poster. Accepted posters will be listed in the ABCT conference book, which is a great way to build your CV, share your work, and get feedback from others in the field.

We will be accepting up to 12 posters, and up to 3 will receive a best poster award from the SIG.

To submit an abstract for presentation, please submit the following materials to Dr. Monnica Williams at m.williams@ Deadline is August 15, 2016.

  1. ABSTRACT: Be sure to include (a) Objective - the primary purpose of the poster; (b) Method - data sources, subjects, design, measurements, data analysis; (c) Results - key findings; and (d) Conclusions - implications, future directions.
  2. FORMATTING: Submit your abstract in MS Word, 12 point type, Times Roman font, 1 inch margins. Do not use any special formatting in your document. The filename should be the last name of the first author. Do not exceed one page.
  3. AUTHORS: Please list all authors in the order they should appear in the heading of the abstract. The presenter and/or first author should be a member of the African American SIG (required for submission). Becoming a member is easy — just complete the form above requesting membership. Also indicate your membership in your submission. You must also include institutional affiliations and departments for all authors.
  4. CONTACT: Please provide contact information for the first author (phone, institution, department, mailing address, email contact). If the first Author is not the Presenter on an abstract, provide contact information on the Presenter as well.
  5. KEY WORDS: Up to five key words should be selected.
  6. SUBMITTING YOUR ABSTRACT: Please send your abstract as an attached MS Word file and include contact information and institutional affiliation of all authors in the body of the email as well as on the abstract document. Put "AA-SIG Submission" in the title of your email.
  7. If accepted, your poster should follow the ABCT SIG Poster Exposition Guidelines: Each Poster has a maximum size of 18 inches wide by 19 inches tall. Mount your poster on foam board or cardboard. Presenters should prepare handouts on essential information that doesn't fit on the poster or be prepared to share an email address for follow-up correspondence.
